Scarlet-sided Pobblebonk - Limnodynastes terraereginae

Identification:

The Scarlet-sided Pobblebonk is between 80mm (females) and 75mm (males) in length. The colouration of its back varies between brown, dark grey and light grey that may be blotched, spotted or plain. Like its name, its sides are bright orange, red or even yellow and this extends to its limbs and feet. A dark band appears from its nostril, over its eye and front leg.

Habitat:

The Scarlet-sided Pobblebonk prefers areas with sandy soils and dense vegetation throughout the coast of QLD and a small part of northern NSW.

Calls and breeding:

Males call a resonant "bonk" from holes, vegetation or water from October to May after rain. Females lay their eggs in a foamy mass attached to vegetation. Tadpoles are medium sized and are darkly coloured.

Conservation Status and threats:

While the Scarlet-sided Pobblebonk's conservation status is not of concern, it may be threatened by habitat modification and degraded water quality.
