| Bayside and Bulimba Wildlife Monitoring Program |
Community involvement in conserving environmental values in Brisbane is important, however knowing precisely what the biodiversity values are is an imperative first step. A community-based wildlife monitoring program is being established in the Bayside (Lota, Wynnum and lower Tingalpa) and Bulimba creek catchments to increase knowledge of local wildlife and introduced species such as local distribution, population densities and habitat utilisation.
Community survey groups are being established and will consist of up to 15 members per group. To maximise the outcomes of this program and to ensure accurate records and ethical use of wildlife, all members will be trained in fauna identification, record keeping and application of best-practise survey techniques. Training will be offered regularly to allow for new members to get involved as well as to refine the skills of existing members.
Chosen sites will be surveyed a minimum of three times per year. The data collected will be utilised to prioritise and evaluate on-ground activities such as site rehabilitation, installation of wildlife movement infrastructure and pest control. Information will also be utilised for supporting funding applications, focusing and identifying areas for further research and identifying key management actions for Council. All records will be submitted to Council for inclusion into the BCC Fauna and Flora Citywide Database.

Why not get involved in the new wildlife monitoring program which will include regular birdwatching, spotlighting and stagwatching (observing wildlife coming out of hollows and nest-boxes on dusk). You don’t need to be a wildlife expert - training and equipment is provided!
Four sites have been established across the two catchments, with another two currently being explored. We now need your help to regularly monitor these sites by joining one of the survey teams. Each site only needs 1-2 hours of your time 3-4 times per year. So while your time commitment will be small, the rewards are enormous. It is a great way to meet new people, learn new skills, enjoy the outdoors and most importantly contribute to protecting our local environment.
Survey teams are needed for the following sites and remember that wildlife experience is not necessary:
|
| Mt Gravatt Reserve - bird watching and spotlighting | |
Melaleuca Environmental Park, Lota - spotlighting
108 Greencamp Rd bushcare site, Wakerley - bird watching
Hemant quarry reserve - spotlighting, bird watching, fish snap shots, invertebrate sampling
Tingalpa wetlands - spotlighting, bird watching, fish snap shots, invertebrate sampling |
|
If you would like to participate in these spotlighting and bird watching surveys please contact us.
